Physical Development of a Child
Friday, January 27th, 2012
The physical development of a child will obviously depend on the age of the child. A 2 year old will not have physically developed as much as a 4 year old – that is a given. However, even if 2 kids are of the same age, they may still develop differently. Each child is individualistic and thus it is not fair to expect all children to develop physically in the same way. But by and large, physical development of a child consists of the development of gross motor skills as well as the development of fine motor skills.
In addition to the distinct differences in these two types of physical developments, there are also many stages of physical development that a child goes through. Their physical development does not end at a particular age but continues to do so even when they become teenagers. But obviously it goes without saying that the developmental milestones for a 2 year old will be vastly different from the developmental milestones of a 5 year old.
It is easier to monitor the physical development in kids rather than the emotional, social or the language development. As far as physical development is concerned, you can clearly see what is happening right in front of your eyes. But if you are trying to monitor language development, then you may have to use stories for kids and other readers so as to judge their level of development. In comparison to language development, the signs of physical development of a child are thus much easier to spot.
When we are talking about gross motor skills, we refer to skills such as being able to crawl, being able to stand with and without support, and different activities such as running, skipping, jumping, boxing with your hands etc. These activities basically require kids to use many different parts of their bodies in completing the activities. For example, in order to be able to stand and walk, kids not only require using their legs, but also have to use their thighs and back. These types of skills are called gross motor skills.
On the other hand, fine motor skills are smaller skills that usually require kids to use few muscles in the same part of their body. For example, when turning the pages of stories for kids, children will use their fingers to do so. This means their fine motor skills are developing properly. If you notice that the physical development of a child is not happening in the right timeline, you should consult a child specialist immediately as there could be some serious issues with the child. But since most of these milestones have to be reached within a time range, do make sure that there are indeed valid signs of a problem.
